2011 Award: Kevin Miller

Kevin Miller has been named the Associate of the Year by the California Product Stewardship Council for his inspiring work related to Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).  Kevin’s outstanding work was celebrated at a recent recycling conference where he was presented the award in front of his colleagues.  The award carries the distinction of being given to only one recipient in the state.  That distinction was bestowed upon Kevin for his outstanding work in the City of Napa and for his influence in the industry.

The California Product Stewardship Council presented the Associate of the Year award to Kevin Miller for the following accomplishments:

  • Kevin encouraged your hauler to sign the pledge and donate and support bills and they have become active participants in CPSC including their lobbyist which helps with legislation.

  • EPR has been intentionally part of everything the City is doing and with Kevin’s passionate education on the subject, it’s become contagious throughout the county.

  • Due to Kevin’s efforts to forge partnerships, Sustainable Napa became a partner with CPSC and had Heidi speak at a local meeting with many local elected officials.

  • Thanks to Kevin, the City adopted a resolution in support of EPR and has given support to other cities in the county to do the same.

  • Kevin formed the lamps partnership where we educated local retailers about EPR, and led to Leadership Napa Valley getting actively involved and assisting the City in promoting the project at the Earth Day event and on the press via radio and print – this project is transitional to EPR by bringing in other stakeholders such as retailers and PG&E to shift the costs away from being a solely taxpayer/ratepayer funded activity to other stakeholders in the product chain.

  • Kevin worked with the hauler and City to adjust rates to support the passage of the 2010 carpet stewardship legislation which led to separate rates and collection in Napa.

  • Finding creative ways to financially support CPSC while benefitting Napa through development of the white paper on carpet which was used for the City’s agenda item on carpet and benefitted the entire state and is posted on the CPSC website.

  • Kevin has helped educate the City population promoting notices in the phone books, bill inserts, presentations to the elected and a resolution and much more.

  • Kevin won this award for his creativity in building support and partnerships to support EPR which has been infectious and led to so much support in Napa County.
